With great sadness, the Artists Guild announces the passing of
Joseph Anton "Joe" Nyiri.
When Joe arrived in San Diego in 1962, with degrees in art and education from the University of Wisconsin, he quickly established himself as one of San Diego’s top sculptors, incorporating automobile bumpers, pipes and metal objects and other found objects in his metal sculptures. He also created hundreds of drawings, prints and paintings.
Joe was an Artists Guild member and a member of the Allied Craftsmen of San Diego for many years. He had 35 one-person exhibitions, 18 two-person exhibitions, and was awarded many awards and prizes. His work is in over 350 private and public collections.
He also held a position of teacher-art consultant with the San Diego Unified School District and was an art instructor at the San Diego Zoo.
The Artists Guild selected Joe as one of the 100 extraordinary Guild artists whose works were exhibited at the Oceanside Museum of Art in 2015 in the Guild’s100 Artists: 100 Years - The San Diego Museum of Art Artists Guild - 1915 –2015 Exhibition and will be showcased in the Guild’s Centennial Book.
He will be greatly missed.
Our condolences go to his wife Melissa and his family.
