Simultaneously, it was in this time period that I discovered that soccer was another passion. My talent in soccer developed in the nearby soccer fields throughout the MiddleEast. Hence, I gained recognition from the national youth soccer team of under the age of 14, in Geneva, Switzerland and won many trophies and medals at that time.

After living in Geneva , we decided to emmigrate again to another peaceful city several thousand miles away to a city in California where we lived for ten years as I continued to complete a Bachelor degree in the area of Fine Arts with a minor in Ceramics at a School named Otis College of Art and Design. The school was affiliated with Parsons in New York until 1992. Followed by a one year at Rhode Island School of Design in the subject of Landscape Architecture. I have been painting and making Pottery seriously for the past four years as my work began to mature continuously with several acceptances from curators and Gallery Directors on the East Coast. Most notably an exhibition at the Pleaides Gallery ,New York City. I have participated in Juried competitions under such Jurors as Lisa Dennison Deputy Director and Chief Curator of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; Susan Masuoka, Director of Aidekman Arts Center Tufts University, Dana Miller, Assistant Curator, Whitney Museum, Dr. Andrea Spaulding Norris, at the Lousiana State University , Anne Rocheleau, Director of the Rhode Island Foundation Gallery, and David Kiehl, Curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. Now living in the West Coast I have been notable for selling art and exhibiting in numerous occasions at the SDAI San Diego Art Institute of the Living Artist and stores in San Diego. Hence, I have achieved recognition for attaining first place prize award from the La Jolla Art Association for one of the best regional artists in San Diego. I am also a chairperson of the San Diego Museum of Art Artists Guild.

An Artist Statement by Shant Beudjekian

I have always had a drive to pursue art as a profession; my influences and inspirations are dependent on artists such as Willem de Kooning, Chuck Close, Lucian Freud, the chaotic linear brush strokes of Jackson Pollock, and the unexpected and bold visual definitions of Pablo Picasso. I believe I have the tendency to view art as a process that enables me to extricate myself from all boundaries. I am very fond of Antoine Gaudi and Picasso and the genre of dynamism that is evident in the works of Boccioni and Jean Dubuffet. The sculptures of Jean Dubuffet who analyzes form within form while creating planes through space is mainly the purpose of why I feel the practice of art is a practice of free ideology. That is where for me the strength of art lies. I feel Antoine Gaudi's work epitomizes the subject of art and architecture in the sense that one may create only through diligence the true beautification of art . Art I believe is an endorsement attempted by individuals who contradict reality in a confined form of space. Art is an element that must be continuously debated upon conceptually and technically in depth until one may create a medium of his own. I believe the subject of Contemporary Art is an analogy to the subject of truth and dare.

To my understanding Art is an element that is absorbed subconsciously as much as consciously. Art involves the process of deconstructing and reselecting visual images, almost as if conducting for the right moment a contortion, on surfaces that ascend at times to various forms of communication.

To me art is a device that enables me to perceive and simultaneously enhance my state of well being. The two integral qualities that were investigated at Otis College of Art and Design were of form and space, as they became repetitively dealt with while apprenticing for artists. Nevertheless, I ,also, fulfilled an internship for one year at Rhode Island School of Design in Landscape Architecture. I have attended The Art Students League of New York for 3 years and the National Academy of Design for 2 years, while I was living in New York. Moreover, I have been painting seriously for the past four years as my work began to mature continuously with several appreciative commentaries from curators and Gallery Directors in the East Coast. I have exhibited in several cities in the east coast of the United States, along with an ongoing exhibition at the Pleiades Gallery ,Philadelphia. I have participated in Juried competitions under Jurors as Lisa Dennison as Deputy Director and Chief Curator of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Susan Masuoka, Director of Aidekman Arts Center Tufts University, Dana Miller Assistant Curator, Whitney Museum, Dr. Andrea Spaulding Norris, at the Lousiana State University , Anne Rocheleau, Director of the Rhode Island Foundation Gallery, and David Kiehl Curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. My work as it has matured through time, which has only been recent, I began to realize the profound importance of putting aside all that I have learned. Hence, bringing me to accept all visual expressions in society. Thus it is only now in my most recent years that I have been able to perceive a direction and a focus on this journey of realization.

Hence, I believe that art is an ongoing thing, a process that will emerge with the influences of many artisans, which has enabled me to pursue my goals and helped me decide what my ultimate profession is in art... Now living in the West Coast I have been successful for selling art and exhibiting in numerous occasions at the SDAI San Diego Art Institute of the Living Artist, stores in San Diego and most notably now the Fine Art Festival III and IV sponsored by San Diego Museum of Art. As a result, I have been driven by a desire to capture images of a country that is in the throes of change. - usually places and people outside the major population centers. I try to capture the moment for all time whether it is a person, place or thing, because everytyhing is impermanent, and what we see at that instant will change immediately after the shutter closes, usually never to be captured again. Changing light ads to this impermanence, and sometimes, when I am lucky, light allows a touch of art to creep into my work. My creative juices flow at their highest when I travel. The light, the people, the scenes are usually new to my eyes and excite me. Capturing them becomes all important and I try to do them justice. Confucius said, 'Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it.' While not everything I photograph is beautiful, there is usually an element that communicates some positive emotion to me, and hopefully, to the viewer. I love to travel, so recording memories is part of my work, but the beauty of the world, whether near or far from home, is what draws me into a particular image or scene. Like most photographers, I can easily get lost in my work when I pickup my camera. Too many of the scenes I try to capture are fleeting, so the challenge becomes intense. In the fall of 1999, I was invited by Hillary Clinton to create an ornament for the White House Christmas Tree of an American who I felt was unique in America. So I created a cloth portrait of Georgia O'Keeffe. She could only weigh 6 ounces.

A picture of my cloth sculpture of Georgia was included in the tour brochure of the White House for that Christmas season. The sculpture now resides in the Clinton Library. A picture of her can be found here in the listing of my sculptures.

My cloth sculpture is an original one of a kind sculpture. With some I've been inspired to create a poem. I seek to capture a moment, a mood and an attitude of body.

When I began to sculpt in clay I thought I was cross training for my cloth sculptures. Then I was carried away with the whole process of sculpting a face or figure for bronze. I saw people, their faces and the attitudes of their bodies in a whole new way. And I had to learn to capture \"color,\" pattern and rhythm in the bronze through how the light played over the surfaces.

I was inspired to creating faces using real features and expressions. So I sculpt from real people who live around me in San Diego, a port city, with its gas lamp district, street scenes and artists' communities, its bohemian culture side by side with universities and creative technology. In all my sculptures I strive for that moment that creates a dialogue between me and the life I observe.

That's why I enjoy commissions. This past year I have completed a bust and pair of hands for Doc, a set of floor tiles with vines and a butterfly in fossil relief for Elizabeth and a trio of coiled copper plated hangings to display Satish's magnets. Soon I will begin a commission to design two sets of bronze cabinet pulls for bathrooms for Elizabeth's new house. And maybe Chuck will go forward with his commission of a cloth figure with his many hats and easel.

Most recently completed is the bas relief celebrating \"Two Californias\" with 11 ethnic and historic faces in the listing below. My early experiences of being a girl were that I was always waiting for things, people, trains and busses, trips, appointments, life to begin. Later as a woman I waited for babies to come, waited in hospitals as my parents died, waited for airplanes to come and go. This is me waiting.
This sculpture took more than a year to complete and multiple molds. I switched around luggage until I found the composition pleasing, dynamic and reflecting several eras, locations and levels in society.

Once again it was there.
I cried for just the sound of it
Awakening my slumber.
And again I heard You say, \"Hello\".

I grabbed my clarinet.
I wanted to set the word to music.
The music of Your voice
Like a rush within the stillness
Again said, \"Hello\".

The stones were a witness
To my heart's emotion,
Call answering call,
As the tone of it seeped into me
Filling my flesh with longing.
Did I remember to answer, \"Hello?\"

I hope the notes reached You,
\"It's me again.\" revealed my happiness,
The joy of reuniting.
On this day under the magnolias
A question asked and answered.
\"Are You still there?\"
\"Yes, hello again!\"

The generation or commission so to speak of this sculpture was a call from the Carol Duvall Show on Home and Garden Television Network. They expressed their desire to visit my studio and film the creative process I use to develop an idea for a sculpture.
They came one day and completed about 8 hours of filming. Then they called to say they were so excited with the footage they had some specific shots they would like to add. So they came for 6 more hours of footage. The finished segment was about 8 minutes long.
Under the Magnolias expresses for me those special moments when the sun breaks through the clouds, the butterfly lands on my hand or a stranger's child looks at me and suddenly smiles for no good reason. It's like the half remembered melody of some magnificent personal prayer.

The genesis of this cloth sculpture was a challenge issued in my quilt guild. We were given a brown paper bag with a silk man's tie inside. This material forms the torso of the figure, the collar and cuffs and one of the extra arms.
The theme was 'ties that bind.\" I wanted to indicate my state of disconnection generated by a psychological shift in my life at the time and the physical shift of a move caused by the loss of my home, studio and family members. Hense the title, Self Portrait: Feeling All Untied.

Materials: Cloth, a silk man's tie, cardboard, various cottons, oak wood flooring left over from the Sam Goody's store in Horton Plaza, one of my husband Joe's architectural projects at the time. The arms and legs in the boxes are jointed and not removable. The figure is not jointed and can be removed from the footstool. Her hair is some discarded thread left over from my move and includes threads from fringing the cloth in the two boxes. Her poem is printed on the cloth letter near her feet.

Watching Indian women sweep is like enjoying a ballet. The broom straws are long and facile. Their design causes the women to bend at the hips and move gracefully as they sweep holding the broom in one hand using a backhand flicking motion. I had to capture this rhythm for you to see and enjoy.

The Sweeper is one of a trilogy of Indian women figures which also include The Rangoli and The Waterbearer and are part of a series I called Work Is Worship. You can see the other two with their poems in the Archives on my website.

But Ginger is Ginger, a model here in San Diego with a fiesty beautiful child and a sweet mother, both of whom I've met.
I was particularly attracted to her strong facial features in contrast to her bouncy, flirty pony tail. Each part of the pony tail was a separate mold so again the skilled artisans at Baja Bronze worked to weld it together with just the right amount of attitude.
Some people think this is stone, ask to touch it and then caress it softly with their fingers. Even still they think it's stone. The stone feeling is created on the bronze with a specific method of applying the patina chemicals and using the torch.

Sometimes there would be more than one person doing the braiding and they would all be gossiping and laughing.
I noticed on the subway as well that there were many braiding patterns possible. I was really tempted and had my hair been longer at the time...well, let's just say, \"Have you ever seen a red head with braids like these?\" Joe didn't want me to.
When Jasmine came to model for me, I had many questions about the size (tiny) of her braids and the hair pattern (circular) that had been used. She took her hair down to show me how she was \"felting\" the braids as they grew out and how she had \"felted\" in the rings. Count them; there are 5 rings in her hair, plus one in her nose and one in each ear.

The artisans at Baja Bronze, the foundry where I have the sculptures cast in bronze, only knew collars that laid down flat or came right up on the neck. They scratched their heads over my pictures and \"pig Spanish\" as I demonstrated how it fit.
I hoped the design of the sculpture would express the protectiveness of an earlier Japanese culture, costume and manners that I saw in the way her neck looked feminine and vulnerable surrounded by the kimono collar. Does any other feminine mode of dress do this so well?
This model is Niki, the same model as for the sculpture, Jade. The silk kimono she wore didn't quite reach the ground and cover her black Nike shoes and white socks. A Japanese painter in my studio, Fomiko, explained that her waist was very long and legs very short so the kimono with its obi placed above the waist gave a more graceful look to her body.

It was You who caused my desire.

You came and whispered, \"Dream of the Sky\".
And I longed for You, my Lord.

Then I entered the darkest place.
Confined, I waited again for my skin to crack.
Drying, fragile, dangling by a silken thread,
Scarcely able to imagine Your presence, my Love.

What could be the purpose?
What will be the results?
A half breath before extinction, I called out
\"Someone. Anyone. Cut me loose.\"
And I questioned Your wisdom and Your love.

It was Your grace that I break my own bindings,
Lest I emerge too soon, forever weak and crippled.
How else could I know my strength, my truth?
How else could I discover that You are me?
Poem by Jane Darin 1999

In November of 1998, I was invited by Uta Brauser to do an art installation on the weekend of my 60th birthday, January 23, 1999. I once held a live butterfly on my finger at the San Diego Wild Animal Park butterfly aviary. So I hand painted a cheesecloth aviary and filled it with soft piano music, six different species of jointed butterfly figures on pedistals, some fairies and a water fountain. I Dream of the Sky was the central figure displayed with her poem.

\"It has been said that something as small as the flutter of a butterflys wing can ultimately cause a typhoon halfway around the world.\" Chaos Theory What a birthday this was for me! All weekend I got to sit at the entrance to my display and wach people enter cautiously. The space could only hold two or three at a time. When they emerged some were tearful. \"What did you do to the air in there?\" one asked. Never before or since have I gotten to enjoy people's collective response to my work. It was the perfect way to display it. Original one-of-a-kind sculpture

Currently, this piece has been placed with me for sale on the secondary market from the collection of Diana Wenman, a six time Emmy award winning video director and editor from NYC where she enjoyed a career working with The Electric Company, The Metropolitan Opera and others. She has placed three of her collection of my artworks with me at this time. Materials: Cloth figure, felted scraps and threads with net for chrysalis or pupa. She can be lifted from the cloth hand and positioned as she is fully jointed. Base is wood.

In my twenties as I became familiar with photography and cameras, I wanted to capture the images to share the feelings I was having with others. With practice and experimenting, I discovered that certain qualities of the light conveyed these emotions. That became my goal. Taking photographs is my way to share my feelings about my surroundings. I hope when you see my art, you experience similar feelings and they fill you with the same joy.

Most of my images come from slide or negative films. In the last few years I began using digital cameras and learned to manipulate digital images. Now I shoot mostly digital images in RAW format. I love the flexibility of seeing the image right away, remembering what I reacted to and adjusting the image to bring out my feelings about it.

I love to print my images on canvas and at large scale. When I do this my photographs look like paintings. And, to me, they begin to have more of the impact I originally saw. My career as an architect has also influenced how I see the world around me. Therefore, I am attracted to graphic images and scenes.

I am mostly self taught when it comes to photography. Mostly I read articles about photograph and studied the diverse works of such masters as Ansel Adams, Ernst Haas, Paul Strand and David Muench. I loved the range of values Ansel Adams captured in his prints. The way Ernst Hass captured color, the stark reality and strongly graphic quality of Paul Strand's images and David Muench's clarity and sharpness of details all contributed to my own style.

All of this is by way of saying that you, as a viewer of my photographs are the second side of my conversation. I enjoy seeing you respond and enjoy the feelings I hope my images convey. She continued education at San Diego State University, and later enjoyed both art and photography classes at Grossmont College. To hone her skills in life drawing, Elaine attended Watts Atelier, 3 1/2 years then continued another 1 1/2 years at the Athenaeum. In addition she participated in many workshops studying a wide variety of painting techniques.

Personal experiences have provided a rich history for Elaine's art. She and her husband have raised 4 children, two of them currently active in the art world. In addition to their own children, they have hosted 13 exchange students, some staying as long as a year. Following were invitations to the students' respective countries. Elaine found cultural differences fascinating.

With this background, Elaine's art reflects her view of society, interpersonal relations, and the affects of technology on the human spirit, specifically how technology has fostered a diminishing of human interaction while seeming to put everyone \"in touch\". She paints both surrealistic and representational works in oil and oil pastel. Her works have been juried into many local and national shows; additionally, her work is represented in Canada, Estonia, Germany, Switzerland, and Venezuela. While living in Naples, Italy from 1983 through 1987, I had the opportunity of studying at the Instituto della Porcellana e della Ceramica located on the grounds of the Capodimonte Palace. From the Italian masters of the institute, I learned techniques, which included making many types of flowers and leaves in the Capodimonte style, a tradition that dates back to the early 1700's. This experience in Italy marked the first step in the process of my search for a clear direction in my ceramic work.

Upon returning to the United States, I worked with many techniques to enhance and combine with the ceramic processes I learned in Italy. I studied throwing on the potter's wheel from an accomplished San Diego potter. Creating bowls and other forms became a necessary step in the development of my personal style.

In addition to creating thrown vessels, I maintain an interest in architecture including the extraordinary style of Spanish architect Antonio Gaud. I have become increasingly fascinated with texture, which is also seen in Gaud's work. The abstract and intricate forms are ones I have incorporated into my work of a hand built-slab technique. To these forms I apply various patterns and textures and create free form, architectural objects. Specifically these forms become vessels, baskets, wall and table vases.

All of my work is created in a studio at my home and in Studio 16B at the Spanish Village Art Center, Balboa Park. Dieter discovered a thirst for creative exploration early in life. As a natural master of texture and color, Dieter has nurtured her gift for artistic expression that has earned her international recognition and taken her around the globe.

A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Dieter began her studies at the Cooper School of Art. Her work there earned her a place at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Upon completing that phase of her education, her artistic passion carried her across the Atlantic to Paris, where she studied at L'Ecole des Arts Appliques. Over the next ten years, Dieter's work was successfully represented at several solo exhibitions throughout France and established for her a reputation for elegant forms, economy of line, and remarkable control of the brush.

In 1989 Dieter moved to San Diego. The change of environment revitalized her unending quest for artistic expression and communication. She immediately began creating provocative and innovative pieces for both her own solo shows and for multiple-group exhibits. She also began to immerse herself in the local creative and performing arts communities and soon became a student, and later a teacher, of Expressive Art Therapies.

Over the years, Dieter has facilitated art workshops, taught art and art therapy to both adults and children, performed as a dancer for City Moves Dance Foundation, and volunteered for such organizations as the San Diego Art Institute, and the Museum of Photographic Arts. She is the company manager for the world-renowned Old Globe and continues to produce celebrated works for both regional and national art exhibitions.

Throughout her long and illustrious career as an artist, Dieter's style has continually evolved. The richness of her contemporary palette has developed over years of artistic inquiry, and she counts O'Keefe, Modigliani, Kandinsky, and others as equally powerful influences. Her work glows with rich and vibrant color and evokes timeless themes juxtaposed with reflections of memories from her extensive travels throughout North America, Europe, Australia and Africa as well as her intrapersonal journeys closer to home. I approach a dimensional piece as an effort to take the material to its highest and best expression. A commitment to employ the fullest craft, detail and display of the inherent beauty of my medium. For reasons best defined by my travels, heritage and experiences, my Art and the passion for creating it is more studied than abbreviated - something done as thoroughly as my ability can create.

Personal Notes: A long-time Californian, Lorenzo Foncerrada, at age 6, moved with his family to San Diego from Guadalajara, Mexico. As a young man, Lorenzo was influenced by his father Miguel Foncerrada Cuervo who studied in Mexico with an elite group of internationally famous Artist Friends from the Mexican artistic revolution period of the 1920's: Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Tina Modotti, Edward Weston, Jean Charlot, and Donal Hord. This legacy in Art led to a Lorenzo's interest in pursuing and participating in creative work.

Known as \"Fonce\" to his friends, he attended local schools and graduated from San Diego State University with a B.A. in Mathematics and a minor in Art, excelling in Pottery, Furniture Design and Sculpture.

Although employed after college as a Mathematician in the Space Program, his interest in design, art, sculpture and woodworking remained keen. So it was natural, when he completed his overseas tour as an Air Force Captain, for him to pursue a livelihood in the field of design. He established a furniture design business where he designed and made custom decorative and commercial projects, and opened an Imports shop in Old Town State Park, where he and other Artisans produced and sold original work.

In the 1970's Fonce worked at Foodmaker Inc. (Jack-in-the-Box restaurants), heading the Design & Graphics department working on Artwork, Logos, and Restaurant Interiors.

From 1979 - '90's, was design principal of Foncerrada Design Associates, involved in a myriad of corporate image and interior design projects. Fonce and his entire staff were early proponents and users of Macintosh Computers for Graphics and Layouts.

His Design and Art have been featured in the Los Angeles Times Home Magazine, American Home Magazine, California Redwood Magazine, San Diego Home and Garden Magazine, and Fine Woodworking Magazine, among others. He is a past member of the Sign Advisory Committee for the San Diego Community Colleges, and past president or the San Diego Communicating Arts Group. In 1988, as member in the San Diego Chapter of the International Society of Interior Designers, received this chapter's Distinguished Member Award. A Member of SDMAAG, San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association, and San Diego Sculptors Guild, he has participated in, and won awards in the prestigious Design In Wood Show. Recent Commissions include Hindu Dancers, Eight gilded 'Monkey Kings', Large Doors, and Decorative Bronzes.

In recent years he concentrated on traveling, buying woodcarvings for his Enchanted Woods of Old Town, selling the store a couple of years ago, to concentrate full time on his sculpture. Now he works at his 100-year-old home/studio, that he and his artist-wife, Nancie, are continuously renovating."; lorenzoFoncerrada.add("Adelita",7,42,"33:20:18",4200,0,4,"adelita", "Handcarved from a partially hollow Black Walnut tree burl.
