Meeting and Greeting

On Sunday, June 10, members and guests of the San Diego Museum of Art Artists Guild met for the Annual Membership meeting. More than fifty people enjoyed good food and good company in The Museum’s James S. Copley Auditorium.

We were privileged to hear from Roxana Velásquez, The Maruja Baldwin Director of The San Diego Museum of Art. Ms. Velásquez talked about the events coming up at the Museum and the close relationship the Guild has with the Museum. Following Ms.Velásquez’ address to the Guild membership, Dr. James Grebl, the Museum’s Manager of Library and Archives, gave a very interesting presentation about the Guild’s long history in supporting the Museum.

A few of the highlights presented were: The Art Guild (as it was then called) was created in 1915 by a group of civic leaders in order to help organize the American Exhibition of Art for the Pacific Panama Exhibition in 1925. In 1920, the members of the Art Guild helped create a new organization called Friends of Art to encourage art exhibitions. Most of the members were civic leaders. The two groups eventually merged and became The Fine Arts Society.

The Fine Arts Society helped operate the new Museum of Art when it opened in 1978. In 1979, the group became known as the Artist Guild. More detailed information will be provided when The Museum and the Guild celebrate their 100 year anniversary in 2015.

After the informative talk by Dr. Grebl, Katy McDonald presented a warm introduction to Angelika Villagrana, the newly elected president of the Artists Guild. She was then honored by the board for her exceptional work. Then business part of the meeting took place. Jane Darin, our outgoing president, was honored by the board. Fortunately, she has agreed to stay on as vice-president. Also honored were outgoing board members Adam Koltz and Jeff Brosbee. Angelika Villagrana has stepped in as our new president.
