Torrey Pines Runoff

Painting Plein Air particularly the coastal area has always been challenging. The runoff of water at Torrey Pines provided a perfect combination of hills, landscape, water and vegetation. Capturing the light and color, though fleeting, added to the spirit of the painting. Painted in an impressionistic style,the initial surface was lightly toned with the major compositional shapes outlined. Value and color were chosen to convey the subtlety and quiet mood of the landscape. The detailed sketches provided enough information to complete the painting process in studio.
